A MASSIVE 7.0 magnitude earthquake has hit southern Japan overnight, according to the US Geological Survey this is the second earthquake just a day after nine casualties were recorded in another powerful tremor.
The quake which hit Kumamoto prefecture of the main island of Kyushu at 1.25am Saturday (3.25am AEST) was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres, acording to the USGS .
The earthquake which was put at a magnitude of 7.1, by the japanese
metrologial agency had initially issued a tsunami warning for the western coast of Kyushu island, where hundreds were reportedly injured in a quake late Thursday, but later lifted it.
Acording to public reporter NHK cases of multiple fresh injuries have been reported particularly with that of a collapsed bridge in Kumamoto city which is yet to be confirmed.
There have been several reports of people trapped under debris at several locations, with images shown by the broadcaster of rescue workers removing debris from the top of a collapsed house in an intended search for anyone trapped underneath.
This is the second massive earthquake that has hit southern japan in just two days.
